After that, the guitar was hung on the wall and left to gather dust for the next couple of years. To cut a long story short, the guitar sounded great but for some reason, it seemed to lack a certain something that I couldn’t put my finger on. On getting it home and after restringing the guitar left-handed (for that is what I am) and a quick tune, I sat down to have a play. Imagine my surprise when enquiring, that the price was just £40. It turned out to be a 1956 Egmond (Dutch firm, now bust) 12 String acoustic, 17 fret neck, 12th fret at the body. There, sat in the window, was something that instantly caught my eye, a guitar. Several years ago, I visited a charity shop in Kendal, UK. With this post, there will probably be many of you fellow guitar enthusiasts out there, that will think I’ve completely lost the plot? In 2003 this little Egmond - now worth an estimated $800,000 - went on display at the Beatles Story Museum in Liverpool (below). This guitar - minus its machine heads - was auctioned off in London during the mid '80s, and thanks to its anonymous British owner was on loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland from 1995 to 2002. Harrison made his show business debut with this guitar the following year at the Speke British Legion Club, where The Rebels, a skiffle group formed by the Harrisons and three mates, played their one and only gig. While trying to adjust the action, the lad accidentally unscrewed the neck from the body, but after a few weeks in the cupboard, the Egmond was rescued by fellow guitar neophyte Peter Harrison, who mended his brother's instrument. The advert for this guitar called it "the cheapest Model in our range" at four pounds, seven shillings and six pence.
